LENA JUNIPER

PROGRESSIVE DISCIPLINE PLAN

1.0 Introdcution: Educating students in the safest possible environment is the ultimate goal of Lena Juniper Elementary School. In our efforts to reach this goal, the following positive behavioral guidelines have been established. In addition, to ensure that all students have the right to learn in a safe environment, the teacher and staff at Lena Juniper Elementary School are committed to uphold and enforce the following behavioral expectations at all times: BE SAFE, BE RESPECTFUL, AND BE RESPONSIBLE (3 B'S). Our school policy will incorporate and note the use of all available school resources, including the district school police and Reno Police Department, as intervention in the event that any child or adult creates an unsafe atmosphere here at our school.

2.0 Behavioral Expectations: At Lena Juniper Elementary School we believe that our school climate must be a postitive, safe, caring and consistent one. It is our goal to create an environment where all students and staff are safe, respectful and responsible. Everyone deserves the right to be treated with dignity and respect and must be accountable for individual actions and behaviors. If a student engages in a behavior that is unsafe, disrespectful, irresponsible or interferes with a TECHER'S RIGHT TO TEACH, or interferes with another STUDENTS RIGHT TO LEARN, it will be considered an infraction of school policy and will therefore result in disciplinary action.

The following is the progressive discipline plan we have created here at Lena Juniper Elementary School:

  1. School wide expectations are prominently posted in all locations and are positive, specific and taught by classroom teachers on a weekly basis.

  2. Students are reinforced by staff for displaying safe, respectful and responsible behavior through various positive recognition systems (verbal praise, Stallion Stars, and quarterly awards).

  3. Minor violations of the 3 B's will result in a minor office discipline referral (ODR) as designed by WCSD 2009 (See Attachement 1). The involved adult will immediately reteach the expected behavior and dispense an appropriate consequence which may include but is not limited to: verbal warning, loss of recess time, removal from group or surroundings. Four minor ODR's will equate to one major ODR as designed by WCSD.

  4. Major violations will result in a major office discipline referral (ODR). Administration will dispense an appropriate consequence which may include but in not limed to: removal from the classroom into another classroom, student sent to the office escorted by an adult, in school suspension, out of school suspension, parent-teacher-principal conference, referral to MTSS team, referral to Educational Opportunity School.

  5. Student is escorted by an adult to another location for extreme behavior.

3) PROGRESSIVE DISCIPLINE STEPS: The discipline plan established for Lena Juniper Elementary School provides for the temporary removal of a student from their regular classroom setting if a teacher believes such student has engaged in behavior that seriously interferes with the teacher's right to teach and/or another student's right to learn. When a student is removed from a classroom, the principal will provide an explanation for the removal and offer the student the opportunity to respond. In additon, the principal will notify the student's parent(s) or guardian(s) of the removal within 24 hours. Students removed from the classroom under the plan's provisions will be temporarily assigned to an alternative placement that separates the student from other students in the regular classroom setting. During this period of alternative placement, students will be prohibited from participating in any extracurricular activities.

Within 36 hours after a pupil has been removed from the classroom, a conference will be scheduled between the student, his/her parent(s) or legal guardian(s), the principal and the classroom teacher. During the conference, the principal and the classroom teacher will provide the pupil and his parents with an explanation for the student's removal. In addition, the student and his/her parents will also be afforded the opportunity to respond to all allegations at this time. At the conclusion of this conference, the principal shall recommend whether to return the student to the classroom or continue the temporary placement. If the principal recommends that the student be returned to the classroom from which he/she was removed from and the teacher who removed the pupil does not agree with the recommendation, the principal shall continue the temporary placement and immediately convene a meeting with the RTI-B team to review placement and disciplinary action. The committee shall review the circumstances of the student's removal from the classroom and based on their review, determine the best placement available for the student. At this time the committee will direct that the student be: (1) returned to the classroom from which he/she was removed (2) assigned to another classroom temporarily or permanently if appropriate (3) assigned to an alternative educational program (4) suspended or appropriate discplinary action they feel necessary.
